Selena’s charity work is part of her role as a UNICEF ambassador, a title she’s held for two years.
The Disney star told E! News she got the idea to go on the trip from fellow UNICEF ambassador, Joel Madden. He’s been to the Congo before and “said it was the most intense thing he had ever done in his entire life – and the best thing he had ever done.”
Gomez has already visited Ghana and Chile in an effort to raise awareness of the organization’s work with children.
“We first went to Ghana and then we went to Chile. In April, we’re going to go somewhere a little harder, the Congo…The first trips were to ease me into it.”
This past Friday, Gomez held a benefit concert for UNICEF at The House of Blues in Los Angeles, raising over $200,000. Fans attending the teen sensation’s perfromance included David Beckham’s three sons, BF Justin Bieber and Big Time Rush!
